What Should I Look for When Hiring a Wedding DJ?

If you've started searching for a wedding DJ in Amarillo or across the Texas Panhandle, you've probably noticed everyone claims to be "the best." Here's the truth: with today's technology, almost anyone with a laptop and a Spotify account thinks they can be a wedding DJ. But there's a lot more to it than buying some equipment. After more than 40 years doing this, I've learned exactly what separates a DJ who sits in the corner and just plays music from one who runs your wedding.
I'm Jack Light, owner of DJ Entertainment, and I've had the honor of being inducted into The Knot's Hall of Fame for the work we do here in Amarillo and throughout the Texas Panhandle. Below is everything I'd want a couple to know before they hire anyone.

1. Ask What Happens When Something Goes Wrong (Because Something Always Does)
Just last week, I was working a wedding when the entire area lost power. No electricity, no sound system, no lights.  This is the kind of moment that could derail a wedding ceremony before it starts. But I always carry a battery-powered backup speaker, and the couple's music was already backed up on an old iPod, completely separate from Wi-Fi or streaming. The ceremony went on without a hitch. Most of the guests never even knew anything had happened.
That's not luck. That's 40 years of learning to expect the unexpected. When you're interviewing DJs, ask directly: "What's your backup plan if the power goes out or your equipment fails?" If they don't have a real answer, that tells you something.

2. Make Sure They're Prepared for Every Genre, Not Just the Couple's Favorites
One of the biggest mistakes I see couples make when planning their music is building the entire playlist around their own favorite songs and forgetting about the diverse group of people who will actually be on the dance floor. Grandma, the college roommates, the coworkers, the little cousins, they're all expecting to hear something they can dance to.
A great wedding DJ isn't a jukebox playing your Spotify list. A great wedding DJ reads the room, genre by genre, generation by generation, and knows when to shift the energy to keep everyone dancing, not just the wedding party.

3. Do Your Own Research. Reviews Tell You More Than Any Award
Yes, credentials matter. I'm proud of my Knot Hall of Fame distinction. But don't stop there. Before you hire a DJ:

• Read reviews from real couples on Google, The Knot, Zola, Yelp, and Facebook
• Ask other wedding vendors (photographers, planners, caterers) who they've seen perform well
• Ask your venue owner directly. They watch DJs perform over and over, and they know who actually delivers a great event versus who just shows up with speakers

Venues and vendors have no reason to sugarcoat it. Their opinion is often more valuable than any badge on a website.

Don't risk having this as a focal point at your perfect reception.

4. Ask the Questions Most Couples Never Think to Ask
During your consultation, go beyond "what songs do you play." Ask things like:

• If the ceremony is outside, do you provide separate sound systems for the ceremony and reception?
• Will you personally be the emcee throughout the entire event, from ceremony through the last dance?
• How flexible are you when the timeline suddenly changes (because it will)?

These questions reveal whether you're talking to someone who understands wedding production, or someone who's only ever DJ'd a birthday party.

5. Know Exactly What's Included in Your Package
Not all DJ packages are created equal. Here's what's included in every wedding we work:

• Unlimited planning sessions leading up to your wedding day
• Convenient payment plans with no added credit card fees
• Separate sound systems for the ceremony and reception
• A wireless lapel microphone for the officiant, so every word is heard clearly and not an awkward distraction in the middle of your ceremony pictures
• Full coordination and emcee services throughout the entire event
• Color-coordinated lighting designed to match your wedding palette. Ask each DJ you're considering for a full, itemized list. If "unlimited planning sessions" and "no fee payment plans" aren't part of the conversation, ask why.

6. Understand What You're Really Risking With a Cheap DJ
I get it, weddings are expensive, and cutting costs on the DJ can feel like an easy way to save money. But before you book a friend with a laptop or the cheapest name you can find, ask yourself:

• Do they actually know every genre of music your guests will want to hear?
• Do they own the songs, or are they hoping for a stable Wi-Fi connection to stream them off Spotify or YouTube in the moment?
• Are they comfortable and confident on a microphone, coordinating a flawless event on what is the biggest day of your life?

A wedding isn't the place to find out the answer is "no." The DJ isn't just providing music, they're providing the reliability and communication skills to run your entire event from start to finish.

7. Ask About Their Experience Handling the Unexpected
Here's something I tell every couple: the only thing on your detailed timeline that will happen exactly on time is the sunset.
The ceremony starts five minutes late. Pictures take eight minutes longer than planned. The buffet line backs up. It starts raining. Grandad is in the restroom when it's time for the grand entrance. The best man is outside having one more cigarette. The bride breaks a heel. The power goes out.
Something always happens, and I'm prepared for that moment every time. Whether it's playing an extra song to buy time, coordinating with the photographer on the fly, or simply going with the flow without missing a beat, that adaptability only comes from experience. Ask any DJ you're considering how they've handled a timeline going sideways. Their answer will tell you a lot.

​8. Book Early. Especially in the Texas Panhandle
Right now, we have weddings booked two years out. Unfortunately, that means we have to turn away couples who wait too long. While the majority of our weddings are on Saturdays, we've been part of celebrations on every single day of the week.
If you've found a DJ you trust, don't wait. The good ones book up fast, and your date may not be available if you put it off.

​9. Understand the Full Planning Process, Not Just Wedding Day
A great DJ experience starts long before the wedding. Here's what that looks like with us:

1. The deposit locks in your date and secures it before another couple does.
2. Choose your package. You will have with access to online planning forms and flexible payment plans.
3. Ongoing planning support. We’re available to meet in person, over Zoom, or by phone anytime you want to talk through ideas or ask questions.
4. Final detail meeting. About a month before the wedding, we will meet to discuss everything: ceremony and reception song selections, correct pronunciation of every name we'll be introducing, and confirmation of every vendor we'll be working alongside.
5. Vendor coordination. We connect directly with your venue and photographer/videographer to make sure every plan lines up perfectly.

That's what "unlimited planning sessions" actually means in practice. You're never left guessing, and by the time your wedding day arrives, every detail has already been handled.

10. The Bottom Line
Find vendors you trust with the biggest celebration of your life. Focus your energy on the planning, then relax on your wedding day, knowing your team is prepared for every moment, expected or not.
